HISTORY OF DOLCE AND GABBANA

HISTORY OF DOLCE AND GABBANA

It’s been said that Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana possess the True Fashionista ability of being able to mix periods and countries, masculine and feminine looks, fabrics and styles. They are one of the best examples of Italian ready-to-wear that exploded during the mid-1980s. Starting their company with less than $2,000, they are today considered “the most powerful designers of our time” and are among the richest men in Italy.

THE NEW TOTE BAG

THE NEW TOTE BAG

You can’t escape it…sometimes you just have a lot of stuff. It’s summer, so what with the water bottle, sunglasses in their protective Burberry case and various must-haves for work, kids and well, life, you need a larger bag. So yes, a great tote should be multi-purpose; look for one that can easily switch from grocery bag to beach bag, from picnic bag to overnight bag. A great tote is also essential for all of us fashion-conscious busy people, and designers are ready with this season’s hippest looks.

THE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF WATCHES

THE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF WATCHES

It’s been said that the first mechanical clock was invented in England circa 1275, and one of the oldest working clocks, completed in 1386, is still in existence at Salisbury Cathedral. It doesn’t have a face and tells the time by striking on the hour. The Swiss watch industry was born in the 1540’s when John Calvin banned people from wearing jewelry, forcing jewelers to learn how to be…wait for it…horologists! Then in 1574 the first known pocket watch was created, only showing the hour. With the patent of the first pendulum clock in 1656 by Christian Huygens, timekeeping got much more accurate and scientists including Isaac Newton used the pendulum to accurately measure the shape of the earth due to the force of movement. Pocket watches with both a minute and second hand and glass to cover the face appeared in the early 1600’s, and the watch as we know it came into existence.

STREETWEAR FASHION

STREETWEAR FASHION

It’s always fascinating when high fashion draws from the raw looks of places unexpected to create the next True Fashionista trend for the runways and beyond. Last fall, designers tapped into what was happening at street level and brought it to the runways, so that we may enjoy these somewhat casual looks during the carefree days of summer. Streetwear has been a boys’ game for years now, what with athletic wear, designer sneakers and hoodies of all colors, but this year women get theirs. The streets just got much hipper, people!

THE BREAKFAST NOOK REDESIGN

THE BREAKFAST NOOK REDESIGN

New home construction and remodels quite often incorporate a breakfast nook into the plan these days, aided no doubt by designers who have noticed that lately people tend to prefer a booth to a table and chairs when dining out. Designer Laurel Harrison insists that the booth experience is happening around the country as designers channel their childhood memories into cozy spaces.

HISTORY OF GLORIA VANDERBILT

HISTORY OF GLORIA VANDERBILT

The great-great-great-granddaughter of shipping and railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt, “Little” Gloria Laura Vanderbilt was born into a life of wealth, fame and privilege on February 20, 1924. Her mother’s family were diplomats and judges. Her father Reginald Vanderbilt was heir to the fortune and a horse-breeder, playboy and alcoholic gambler who died when she was just 17 months old. She married four times, having two sons with her second husband, conductor Leopold Stokowski, and two more with the last, Mississippi writer Wyatt Cooper.
